Ranked: The Easiest and Hardest Heating Systems to Maintain

Keeping your home comfortable year-round is important no matter where you live. However, those who reside in destinations where winter tends to take a turn for the extra-chilly understand just how vital an efficient heating system is.

There’s nothing worse than getting out of bed in the morning to sub-zero temperatures and realizing your heating system has given out. It’s also a wake-up call for many homeowners on the importance of keeping up with heater maintenance.

All of that said, it can sometimes feel overwhelming to consider the many heater possibilities out there. Between the cost of installation and investing in regular heater maintenance, homeowners understandably want to be sure they’re making a good choice.

Consider Heater Maintenance Factors

Ultimately, you want your heater to be effective and fully functioning for as long as possible. So it makes sense to consider heater maintenance when choosing what heating system to install.

It’s important to ask yourself which systems involve the most complex heater maintenance standards and which are easiest to service when required. These are important factors to consider when evaluating how heater maintenance fits into an overall energy budget too. Here, we’ll take a closer look at some of the most manageable heating systems to maintain and some that come with more complex heater maintenance standards.

Furnaces Provide Common Ground and Efficiency Too

When it comes to heater maintenance processes and systems familiar to almost every technician out there, the traditional furnace sits at the top of the list. Otherwise referred to as forced-air systems, furnaces are found in most homes across the country.

Furnaces blow heated air through a ductwork system and can be purchased in either gas or electric varieties. While gas furnaces tend to come with lower monthly energy bills, electric furnaces take the lead on efficiency. That typically cuts down on unexpected maintenance costs overall.

Because furnaces are so familiar on the market, you’re likely to easily find a technician that can handle repairs, heater maintenance, or installation whenever it’s needed. High-efficiency furnaces may be more costly to install initially, but over time they require less repair and offer up more energy savings.

The Maintenance Benefits of Boilers

It’s common to hear furnaces and boilers used as interchangeable terms. However, they are very different heating systems that require different maintenance standards to keep running.

Boilers move the heated water through a home towards radiators and baseboard heaters. They depend on natural gas, propane, or electricity to function effectively.

Many homeowners love the fact that boilers provide a less dry form of heat to the home than forced air. A heated water approach also reduces allergens in the air that could be circulated more freely with forced air.

That said, boilers are a bit more complex to maintain than their furnace counterparts. Many systems function using copper pipes, making installation more expensive and repairs more costly. Unlike furnaces, boilers cannot have an air conditioning system integrated seamlessly.

While boilers are just as efficient as furnaces, they require more maintenance specifications. That means that not every technician is necessarily going to be able to work on a boiler system.

The Benefits and Drawbacks of Radiant Heating Systems

Radiant heating systems can be an excellent addition to a home but are often considered one of the most complexheating systems to maintain. That is because of the complicated installation process and their physical placement.

Like boilers, radiant heating systems appeal to homeowners thanks to their non-allergenic and relatively gentle heating process. In these systems, heated water is moved through pipes or cables installed underneath the floors or in the walls of the home.

The placement of these pipes means that radiating heating systems come with major installation construction. They’re also less accessible when maintenance issues arise.

It’s important to consider that certain types of flooring can also impact heating efficiency. Tiles are typically an efficient but more costly covering option.

Homes primarily covered in wood flooring or carpeting may see these systems working harder to radiate heat. That can lead to more frequent replacement and repair needs. There’s no guarantee that every technician will be able to perform repairs on this type of system.

Picking the System That Fits Your Maintenance Ideals

Every home is unique, and every homeowner inevitably has a different budget to work with. When looking at the maintenance efficiency standards of a heating system it’s important to consider investment compared to the system’s anticipated lifespan and overall effectiveness in your home. Taking time to consider the options is essential to picking a heating system that’s going to make life more comfortable and not more stressful.

First time customer, and am very pleased with the whole experience. The highlight was definitely with the technicians assigned to the job and their work – Tyree and Corey were clean, polite, well-informed, and very helpful with some of the questions I had along the way. Their work appears to be top-notch, and they made sure no mess was left behind. Will definitely be calling and requesting these two again on any future needs.

Never used Paul The plumber company before but I’m glad I did. Very courteous, professional and pleasant from the answering service (Diane) to employees (Jeremy). They diagnosed the problem and fixed it in no time. Very happy and satisfied with their service. Definitely will use again. Thank you

K. Bernardo

We’re first time home owners and needed help with some plumbing and adding a filter system. They were able to get a technician scheduled to our house within a day or so of me contacting them. Mike was super helpful and was able to complete all the jobs in a timely manner, and also cleaned up the areas he was working in. Overall a great experience and would definitely use them for future jobs.

I cannot say enough about this company!!! Their only concern is that you are up and running again with no worries. I’ve had Kyle the plumber, and Josh their electrician out here and both are polite, well trained and you can tell they truly care about getting you back in service. Great service, well trained caring staff! I will never go anywhere else!

J. Shea

John was wonderful. He found the problem right away and fixed it. He checked other outlets just to make sure I would be safe. He explained different programs the company offers also. I’m very happy.

I made an appointment on line the morning of July 31 and two trucks showed up at 1:00 pm right on time that same afternoon. Both guys were friendly and very knowledgeable. They quickly found the source of the wet patch on my ceiling which wasn’t the plumbing but a problem with the shower curtain. This is the second time I have called Paul. Both times I got outstanding service and will always call on Paul the Plumber for any plumbing problems in the future. Very reasonable cost for the visit.

These are the after photos of the Rinnai tankless water heater installation and vent to the outside. It was important to me that the crew was able to use the existing vent hole to the outside to run both the intake vent pipe and the outside vent pipe. It made the job very clean and did not change the appearance of the outside wall. A shout out to Mike E, Caleb, Josh & Corey

M. Richdale

Josh was amazing. He was able to install my ring doorbells with no issues. He also did a great check of my homes smoke detectors and a few electrical plugs. He was thorough, Knowledgeable, and easy to work with. I would definitely use them again.

D. Weaver

What a fantastic business. Helped us work with our water district in resolving meter replacement issues. They also fixed a pipe leak that had developed over time. Caleb was wonderful and answered our questions as well as working with the water district engineer on the meter issues. So easy to work with.

V. Vincze

We had an issue with our water…too hard, calcium deposits, and very little pressure in our master bathroom shower only. The techs (Mike E. & Tyler S.) arrived right on time. They were friendly and very personable. After installing our whole house filtration system and successfully finding the issue with our master bathroom, they left the work areas in pristine condition. They were meticulous in their work, and I highly recommend them for any plumbing needs!

J. Wojo

DJ from PTP was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. My shower was not draining and it became a bigger project than I thought it would and they came out quickly and were able to fix my problem. Then when my water heater had a slow leak they came back out quickly to attend to it and fix my problem. I really appreciate their hard work. Thank you so much!! Would definitely recommend them.

H. MacPherson

I would recommend Paul the Plumber 100%. They offered same/next day service. They were friendly, professional and quick – from the office staff to the technicians. Overall an amazing experience from start to finish.

D. Lefort

Arrived as scheduled to fix a leak from the shower valve. Tried to fix old 30 or 40 year old unit but had to replace with a new one. Quality work, parts and cleaned up when they were done. Would definitely use again.

Nick Boudreux

Had a well pump that was shorting out and pretty much had no water. Adrian from this company not only got out next day but was great to work with. He was very friendly and knowledgeable I would definitely recommend this company to anyone that needs work done! Thanks again guys!

Michele
