When Rooms Feel Uneven and Energy Bills Keep Climbing

If some rooms in your Bedford home stay too warm in summer or too cold in winter while others feel comfortable, the culprit is often hidden inside your walls, attic, or crawl space. Leaky ductwork lets conditioned air escape before it ever reaches the registers you actually use. That wasted air still costs you money, because your heating and cooling equipment runs longer to make up the difference. Over the course of a year, the effect adds up to noticeably higher utility bills and equipment that wears out sooner than it should.

Duct sealing addresses the problem at its source. At Paul the Plumber, we locate the gaps, cracks, and disconnected joints in your duct system and seal them so the air your equipment produces travels where you want it. As a family owned and operated company that has served New Hampshire homeowners for 22 years, we approach every duct system methodically, and we back the work we do with a warranty so you know the results will last.

How Duct Leakage Develops Over Time

Ductwork does not stay airtight forever. The metal, flexible, and fiberglass materials used in most Bedford homes expand and contract with temperature swings, and that repeated movement loosens seams and connections. Older tape and mastic dry out and fall away. Rodents, settling framing, and past renovations all contribute to openings that let air slip out into unconditioned spaces such as attics and basements.

A typical duct system loses a meaningful share of its airflow to leaks, and much of that lost air never does any useful work. The problem is easy to overlook because ducts are hidden from view. You feel the symptoms — uneven temperatures, rooms that never reach the thermostat setting, dusty surfaces that return quickly after cleaning — long before you see the cause. Our technicians know where these leaks tend to hide and how to confirm them with the right tools.

Our Duct Sealing Process From Inspection to Verification

We follow a clear sequence so nothing is missed and you understand each stage before we begin. Every job starts with a conversation about the comfort problems you have noticed, because those symptoms guide our inspection.

  • Inspection and assessment: We examine accessible ductwork in attics, basements, and crawl spaces, checking joints, boots, and connections at the air handler and registers.
  • Leakage measurement: Where appropriate, we measure how much air the system loses so we can prioritize the worst offenders and confirm improvement afterward.
  • Sealing the connections: We apply mastic, mastic tape, and approved sealants to seams and joints, and we mechanically fasten connections that have separated.
  • Insulation review: We check duct insulation in unconditioned spaces, since sealed but uninsulated ducts still lose energy to the surrounding air.
  • Verification: We confirm that airflow reaches the registers as intended and that the leaks we found are addressed.

Throughout the project we keep you informed and provide up front pricing, so there are no surprises when the work is complete. If we find that a section of ductwork is beyond sealing and needs repair or replacement, we explain the options plainly and let you decide.

Technical Details That Make the Difference

Not all sealing materials perform equally. The familiar cloth-backed “duct tape” sold at hardware stores is one of the worst choices for actual ducts, because its adhesive dries out and fails within a few years. We use professional-grade mastic and UL-listed foil tapes that stay flexible and bonded through years of thermal cycling. On larger gaps we reinforce the mastic with fiberglass mesh so the seal does not crack as materials shift.

Sealing also has to respect how the whole system breathes. A duct system needs balanced supply and return airflow to operate correctly. If we seal supply leaks without confirming adequate return air, static pressure can rise and strain the blower. Our licensed technicians account for this balance so your equipment operates within its designed range. This attention protects the compressor, blower motor, and heat exchanger from the extra stress that an unbalanced or overly restricted system creates.

Benefits You Can Expect After Sealing

Once your ducts are properly sealed, the improvements show up in several ways that you can feel and measure. The conditioned air your equipment produces finally reaches the rooms it was meant to serve, which evens out temperatures across the house.

  • Lower utility bills: Your system stops paying to heat and cool your attic and basement, so it runs less to keep you comfortable.
  • More even comfort: Rooms that used to lag behind the thermostat setting hold temperature more consistently.
  • Better indoor air: Sealed ducts pull in less dust, insulation fibers, and attic air, which means cleaner air circulating through your home.
  • Longer equipment life: When your furnace and air conditioner do not have to run overtime, their components experience less wear.

These benefits compound over time. A home that once needed constant thermostat adjustments settles into a steadier, quieter rhythm, and the reduced runtime pays you back season after season.

These are the after photos of the Rinnai tankless water heater installation and vent to the outside. It was important to me that the crew was able to use the existing vent hole to the outside to run both the intake vent pipe and the outside vent pipe. It made the job very clean and did not change the appearance of the outside wall. A shout out to Mike E, Caleb, Josh & Corey

Josh was amazing. He was able to install my ring doorbells with no issues. He also did a great check of my homes smoke detectors and a few electrical plugs. He was thorough, Knowledgeable, and easy to work with. I would definitely use them again.

I cannot say enough about this company!!! Their only concern is that you are up and running again with no worries. I’ve had Kyle the plumber, and Josh their electrician out here and both are polite, well trained and you can tell they truly care about getting you back in service. Great service, well trained caring staff! I will never go anywhere else!

I made an appointment on line the morning of July 31 and two trucks showed up at 1:00 pm right on time that same afternoon. Both guys were friendly and very knowledgeable. They quickly found the source of the wet patch on my ceiling which wasn’t the plumbing but a problem with the shower curtain. This is the second time I have called Paul. Both times I got outstanding service and will always call on Paul the Plumber for any plumbing problems in the future. Very reasonable cost for the visit.

We’re first time home owners and needed help with some plumbing and adding a filter system. They were able to get a technician scheduled to our house within a day or so of me contacting them. Mike was super helpful and was able to complete all the jobs in a timely manner, and also cleaned up the areas he was working in. Overall a great experience and would definitely use them for future jobs.

I’ve used Paul the Plumber twice now for electrical issues and they have been wonderful each time. They are fast, polite, knowledgeable, and very fairly priced. They explain everything well and answer my questions thoroughly and I feel safer now knowing what was causing my electrical issues and having it fixed! I will be using Paul the Plumber for all my household needs going forward

We had an issue with our water…too hard, calcium deposits, and very little pressure in our master bathroom shower only. The techs (Mike E. & Tyler S.) arrived right on time. They were friendly and very personable. After installing our whole house filtration system and successfully finding the issue with our master bathroom, they left the work areas in pristine condition. They were meticulous in their work, and I highly recommend them for any plumbing needs!

What a fantastic business. Helped us work with our water district in resolving meter replacement issues. They also fixed a pipe leak that had developed over time. Caleb was wonderful and answered our questions as well as working with the water district engineer on the meter issues. So easy to work with.

Arrived as scheduled to fix a leak from the shower valve. Tried to fix old 30 or 40 year old unit but had to replace with a new one. Quality work, parts and cleaned up when they were done. Would definitely use again.

K. MacCallum

First time customer, and am very pleased with the whole experience. The highlight was definitely with the technicians assigned to the job and their work – Tyree and Corey were clean, polite, well-informed, and very helpful with some of the questions I had along the way. Their work appears to be top-notch, and they made sure no mess was left behind. Will definitely be calling and requesting these two again on any future needs.

DJ from PTP was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. My shower was not draining and it became a bigger project than I thought it would and they came out quickly and were able to fix my problem. Then when my water heater had a slow leak they came back out quickly to attend to it and fix my problem. I really appreciate their hard work. Thank you so much!! Would definitely recommend them.
